Shiori is a reading companion published by i4c studio. This page says what the app does with information, in plain words. Questions go to support@i4c.studio.
The short version
- No account, no sign-in, no ads, and no analytics or tracking tools in the app.
- Your books, tabs, notes, legend and reading sprints are stored on your phone. None of it is sent to us.
- When you look up a book by its ISBN, the app asks Open Library and, if needed, Google Books about that ISBN.
What stays on your phone
Books (title, authors, page count, edition, format, status, cover), the tabs you log (colour, page, note, chapter), your reading sprints (when they ran, how long, start and end page, note), your legend and your settings live in the app's database on the device (the browser's IndexedDB). Appearance, language and sprint preferences are kept in the browser's local storage. Shiori does not ask for your name, email or location.
Book lookups
Looking up an ISBN sends that ISBN to Open Library (openlibrary.org, run by the Internet Archive) and, when Open Library has nothing, to Google Books (googleapis.com). The cover is downloaded once from Open Library or Google and then kept on your phone. Those services see the request like any website visit, including your IP address, under their own privacy policies. Adding a book by hand sends nothing.
The camera
Scanning a barcode uses the camera in the browser, only while the scanner is open. The picture never leaves your phone; only the ISBN it reads is used, as above.
Files you export
Backups (JSON) and tab map images (PNG) are files you create yourself, saved or shared wherever you choose. Shiori does not send them anywhere.
Changes
When Shiori adds sharing or payments, this page will say what changes before those features ship.
